Someone said that "Reviewing P. G. Wodehouse is like taking a spade to a souffle." Reviewing Dorothy Dunnett is the opposite of that, whatever that might be. Taking a scalpel to the great pyramid at Giza?

The 4th in the Niccolo series, Dunnett is at her best here, constantly changing direction, each word carefully chosen, taking us on adventure after adventure. You never know who will die, who will survive, who will wish they hadn't. Her writing is far too dense to appeal to everyone, and the question "Which of these words best describes the mood" is really absurd when applied to any of her work. The obvious answer is "all of the above." I chose "dark" since "all" wasn't offered, and they are in "darkest 15th century Africa" but but "thoughtful," "suspenseful," or even "hopeful" might be accurate (OK, nothing Dunnett ever wrote is "light-hearted" or "nostalgic"). My favorite line is applied to Father Godscalc in Timbuktu:

“He felt here a hunger for books as great as he had heard to be the hunger for salt, when a man rotting and lost in the rainforest would eat his own arm for the life in it.”

No, not "light-hearted" or "nostalgic." Just a genius for adventure.

Scales of Gold Book Four of the House of Niccolo Dorothy Dunnett 9780375704802 Books Reviews

I've read the series three times now. Of the thousands of books I've read in my life (I'm retired), the eight volumes of The House of Niccolo comprise my very favorite book. Dorothy Dunnett was an amazingly brilliant writer!
i love the authors stories they will keep you busy for weeks.
I love Dorothy Dunnett's work. While the Lymond Chronicles are my favorite series, these books are a bit more accessible. I don't have to work so hard to understand them so I can read them quickly and just enjoy the story. By the end of this book I am wondering if she hates Nicholas- the hits just keep on coming. I feel like the poor guy needs a break. But as always she told a vibrant and intricate story.
This is not a stand-alone book. The "House of Niccolo" series needs to be read in order. If you're a fan of historical fiction where the author has researched the non-fictional characters, the places and the historical elements, Dorothy Dunnett is the author for you. In her talented hands, the history doesn't show off or weigh heavily on the fictional characters and their stories. They move through the mid-15th Century as if they were true inhabitants of that era. It was a time where trade flourished, voyages of discovery encountered strange new worlds, and civilizations went to war for good reasons, pillage, or to satisfy the whims of rulers. Not unlike the 21st century. Dunnett's complex, realistic, fascinating cast of characters will keep the pages turning. Filled with adventure, mystery, vengeance, duty, and love, the story captures human nature and the decisions they make with the cards they are dealt. But start with the first book of the series, or you'll be lost.
Love it. Subsaharan Africa at the beginning of the Europe's Age of Discovery is amazingly varied and is largely unrepresented in Western fiction. It was great to have Dunnett take time with the canvas of Timbuoktu, inhabit the cultural conflicts and opportunities. She still gave herself enough time for the characters to get back to Europe for a twisty ending that has me looking forward to the next book.
I've read this series several times over the years, and always find something I've missed. Each book is about a different source of money, in a different part of the Renaissance world.Niccolo has gathered several enemies over the series, all of whom are out to get him, and take over his business. Want to know what Timbuctu was like in the 16th Century? Take a trip across Africa with Niccolo and his team. Dorothy Dunnett knew how to keep her readers awake at night, unable to put a book down. My all time favorite author has collected a troupe of unforgettable characters and put them in unknown Africa. Every Niccolo book ramps up the tension a bit more.
I have read and re-read this book several times. I have the whole sets of the amazing Niccolo and Lymond historical novels. Dotothy Dunnett is unsurpassed in her historical accuracy and exciting plots. Scales of Gold takes you to Africa in the 15 th century where you will learn so much about the civilization there at the time , particularly in Timbuktu, and also follow the characters in excitng adventures . I lost my copy of Scales of Gold and am happy to have a replacement in the same paperback edition as my other Dorothy Dunnett books.
