Breaking Midnight The Fitz Clare Chronicles Emma Holly Books

This is the first of Emma Holly's vampire/shapeshifter (upyr) series (Hunting Midnight and Courting Midnight are sequels). Having read all three, I can definitely say this is my favorite of the set. The reason is the hero, Aimery. I absolutely love, love, love this hero. He is one of those great characters in romance that is ATYPICAL. First of all, he is scarred. An old injury has left his face severely scarred and is therefore automatically different than your run of the mill beautiful hero. Secondly, and probably much more importantly, he is a really great man. He is tender and gentle and treats the heroine (Gillian - the upyr to his mortal) with respect and genuine affection. He displays a willingness to put her needs and desires even above his own. This is truly refreshing after reading again and again about men who behave like unmitigated jerks to their heroines. So if just for Aimery's character alone, I would like this book.

I also found myself liking Gillian as well. The story kept me interested, and knowing that there are books that follow, you find yourself paying attention to peripheral characters you suspect you will meet again. Overall, I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys a sexy AND sweet paranormal love story.

Breaking Midnight The Fitz Clare Chronicles Emma Holly Books Reviews

Sort of twilight-esque, but still a good read, and Emma Holly as always doesn't disappoint. Story line is easy to read characters are ones you can care about.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book. It had a little bit of everything. Romance. Suspense. Mystery. Fantasy. Oh yeah...and hot ... Emma's beings seem to be a mix between vampire and shape shifter. The innocents, especially in the begining with her main female character, is just priceless. This is a must read. I kept it in my collection to read over and over again.
The storyline sounded so interesting that I ordered all three books in this 'set'. The first one was ok, but I couldn't get through the second at all. Ended up throwing all of them away as I couldn't even pass them off to my friends as I do with other good reads. The characters were just strange, not at all like the other good vampire romances on the market today. All the sex scenes were the same, she just flip-flopped the characters. To be fair, I did try to read another of her story lines - Fairyville - and found it to be lacking as well. Ms. Holly has a large fan base according to the posted reviews, but I will not be joining those ranks.
I have to admit I really like Ms. Holly's erotic books (esp Cooking up a Storm). In fact, I think she has the potential to be a really spicy writer.
Alas, she has tried to go mainstream romance paranormal in this book and has ended up with a hopeless hash that her editor really should have known better than to publish.

The first complaint-the loves scenes are so toned down no as to be total plain vanilla between the hero and the heroine. But she commits the cardinal sin of having her heroine have a really spicy romance scene at the start of the book with her ex, and the lion's share of the rest of the 'loves scenes' is the manipulative woman who is the heroine's enemy using her power on an unsuspecting priest and the hero's brother.
Repeat after me a romance is a hero and heroine falling in love.
There are only three scenes which really count between the hero and heroine and the rest is her disguised as a hawk. She is an upyr, a half vampire half werewolf, but the supernatural bits are not really thrilling enough or fully consistent in the book. There was no genuine commitment or even conversation between the couple-I could never figure out why he was supposed to be so heroic. He was a knight at Poitiers? So were lots of others. The obsessive sister in law as villain is also pretty weak. The truly intriuing characters get no real airtime, like her 'father'-but why introduce so many if it is only going to detract from the couple.
Ms. Holly is undoubtedly a writer with talent, but Beyond Seduction and Beyond Innocence were actually better than this novel because at least she was writing with some verve and style, and some passion, even if they were not very typical of what romance readers want (proposed menage a quatres and back door action, for example).
Some of the sentences in this book were unreadable. There are plenty of other werewolf and vampire stories far more sensual (or erotic if you prefer). I am giving it two stars because she ought be be encouraged to try to be a better writer, but not many people have the luxury of cutting their teeth in a major publishing house, and most of them would be too embarrassed. Give this one a miss.
Not as good as "The Demon's Daughter". If you want more Emma Holly, go after "All U Can Eat" -- totally different venue, but also excellent storytelling.
I was on vacation in Asia this past summer and happened to see Kissing Midnight (the first of this series) in the Taipei 101. I loved it and was very eager to read the second and third installment. Verdict? I've read better-written books, but Emma Holly still has some serious genius inside her. I just started reading the third installment of this series and it features a much-darker Edmund, which is generously hinted at in Breaking Midnight. My only complaint is that although the plot sometimes grows stagnant with the same characters, I'm not overly fond (yet) of the way Emma Holly shoved in several new ones. There's an American girl who's willing to help the Fitz Clares, but with a sketchy background and motives, and a prison guard who shows both understanding and contempt for *BRIEF SPOILER* Edmund and the human race. *END SPOILER*

Some parts of Frank and Li-Hua's plot were a little fuzzy and unclear (but that could just be me). Although I like Nim Wei's character and although it would make sense for her to join the quest to rescue Edmund, Nim Wei appears only very briefly and doesn't join them at all. Robin also stays comfortably in London, which confused me some.

Still, it's an all-around good book and gets a sincere thumbs-up from me. Not the best, but hey, no author can appeal to everyone!
