Not for everyone. Author has been accused of being "works based".

I personally "get" what he is saying in the book. I feel like it's very deep thinking. The book is written somewhat biographically, while it tells stories from the authors life. Each chapter contains profound moments in the spiritual journey. Both the falls and the triumphs. I really like it, but I wouldn't suggest it to everyone because everyone seems to "have an opinion" and feel like they should criticize everything.

This book isn't written to tell anyone how to practice their faith. It's simply a story about this mans faith journey. I really enjoyed it, and benefited from it.

FYI: the movie SUCKS!!!! And strays from the noble points of the book quite dramatically!

Blue Like Jazz Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality Donald Miller 9780785263708 Books Reviews

At first I hated the book and couldn't understand why. Who is this hippy? Is he for the faith or against it? Then it hit me a few chapters in. This was a story that reminded me of the days I had turned from Jesus. All the days I had been so self absorbed that people who weren't me didn't matter. It reminded me of who Jesus is and what I believed the day I saw Jesus asking me if I was ready to fall in love with Him.

It's different, this book, in the sense that it's not your usual cliche Christian book. Blue Like Jazz is a breath of fresh air. Miller will make you think, think about who you were, are, and will be. The journey is worth the notes Miller plays for the reader.
This is a heart felt book. We all have had feelings or thoughts much the same as Donald. The difference is he lays it all out there for everyone to see. I learned long ago that God, our Father hears and sees all that we say and do. So let us just be honest with God and others as Donald is and glorify God and bless those around us. This book is worth reading and it had humor which is good medicine..
My plan is to start all over and read it again. And I just finished. This book is so real and so true. I am an old lady and have been a Christian for over 35 years and this book is over 8 years old and yet....and yet. Relating what Don writes about God and his Son and us Christians has affected my personal faith and walk and is humbling and a heart breaker.
I have made it a life goal to have coffee one day with Donald Miller, his writing is so raw and real. He makes me realize that I am not alone in this journey of faith.
I’m getting ready to watch the movie, I actually can’t see this book as a movie so I am excited.
If you are struggling with who you are, when it come to your faith in the world and God read this book with an open heart, ask God to speak to you and be honest with everyone.
I wanted to like this book, what with the great title and a lot of hip phrases sprinkled throughout the book. Also, it was reasonably well written, and that is always a plus. However, it became quite predictable and hackneyed by the time I finished. Friends told me that this belonged on the same shelf as Brian McLaren; I don't think so. Brian McLaren has thought through many of his conclusions. Mr. Miller has bounced from pillar to post in a sometimes jocular spiritual journey, but the "journey" in effect lands him right back where he started from the same evangelical propositional theology of his childhood.
I know this will sound very cliche, but this book is very real. I grew up in the same situation as Miller (single parent, low-income, ULTRA conservative surroundings), and I have to admit he voiced the frustrations of it better than anyone I have ever read. He paints a picture of the Christian faith that starts at its very essence Jesus caring enough about everyone to die for them. In a world where people feel like they have to prove their faith, or legitimize it for some reason even at the expense of others, Miller reminds us its ok to be a little bit of a mystic, and go back to the beginning of God being bigger than we can understand.

I can't lie that there is not much on the Christian bookshelves anymore that I will read. Like the attitudes in our country, the books are getting more and more polarizing, being drawn along political lines in order to appeal to a market. This is one of the few books about faith I will always come back too.
My daughter attends Reed College. There are Church People who frown at her and say, “Didn’t the writer of ‘Blue Like Jazz’ attend that school?” And then she feels judged. I decided to read your book to find out what horrible things Reed was, this school my daughter attends. I found, instead, a refreshing monologue with an intriguing human being on a quest to know God. I know why my daughter attends Reed. And, Don, thank you for such a wonderful book. Tomorrow I am loaning my copy to someone I know who will be refreshed to read it.
