Lady Isabella Scandalous Marriage Mackenzies Series Jennifer Ashley 9780425235454 Books

LADY ISABELLA'S SCANDALOUS MARRIAGE is book 2 in the "Highland Pleasures" series, or what is more commonly called The Mackenzies. Before starting this story I would highly suggest reading "The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie" which is book 1 and is where you will first meet Mac & Isabella. It will also give you some background on them and what they are going through before this story opens up. And you will once again meet up with all of Mac's family who appear here as well as in Ian's story.

Lord Mac and Lady Isabella met and eloped quite scandalously at her come-out ball. Although they've been married for over six years, they have been estranged for the last three and a half of that. Mac had his own personal demons, and Isabella, having suffered a major loss and much grief, decides she cannot live with him anymore and leaves. Now, after all this time apart Mac knows its time to win back the woman he loves more than anyone or anything else in the world. Meanwhile, there is a madman impersonating Mac and who will stop at nothing to take over his life, and that includes taking Isabella right along with everything else.

I loved the romance between this couple which was just beautiful and I found much more believable than that from the first book in the series. You can sense the connection and love between these two who although separated, have never stopped loving each other. To be adored and cherished the way Mac does Isabella was absolutely breathtaking and moving. Mac was utterly wonderful; he was funny, faithful, attentive, charming, and sexy as can be. Isabella on the other hand I thought was a little too stubborn and unreasonable at times concerning their estrangement, but she was still a good, strong, independent woman whom I liked.

The mystery of the forger plays only a minor role and never overtakes the romance. Normally I would think this is a good thing, but instead I think that made this book rather slow going at times. There's a lot of back and forth between Mac and Isabella's past history and problems, then coming back to the present. This was good in the fact that the leads were fully developed and their troubles understood, but there was not a whole lot of excitement and I never had a problem putting the book down after reading just a chapter. In the end this had me wavering between three and four stars, and wishing the author had pulled me in more.

With that being said, I think Ms. Ashley is a great writer and there was even a nice setup for Mac's older brother Cam's story which I'm very much looking forward to reading. The last couple of chapters in this book were very intense and dramatic, as well as compelling. The love scenes are sexy and hot, though not as erotic as in Ian's book. The first two-thirds of it were okay, but unfortunately did not hold my attention much. However, I thought it was a lovely romance between two people who were true soul mates in every way. Overall this one fell a bit short, but I'd still recommend the series/author and plan to read more from her soon.

Lady Isabella Scandalous Marriage Mackenzies Series Jennifer Ashley 9780425235454 Books Reviews

After reading The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, I definitely wanted to continue the series. In the second book, we hear more about the estranged marriage between Mac and Isabella. Their courtship was quick (less than 24 hours) and their marriage full of big parties and even bigger fights. This is really a second chance romance story, which is a trope I always enjoy. There is an underlying mystery that beings them back together again, but what I most enjoyed was the way their past in contrasted with their present. Meaning, they have to see each other in a new light as people who have matured and changed. As a bonus, you get to see Ian an Beth again, which I loved. Lord Ian was a tough act to follow, but Mac’s story is a solid addition to the series.
As the story opens, Lady Isabella has been legally separated from Mac MacKenzie for more than three-and-one-half years. He supports her in her London home, while he paints in London, Scotland or the Continent.

The icy indifference Lady Isabella has been showing Mac comes to a stand-still when she goes to his London home and tells Mac that someone is selling paintings with Mac's name on them. However, Isabella is sure that they are not Mac's; he does not sell his work but gives it away.

This is the story of the reconciliation between the two main characters. However, it is nice to see the rest of the brothers, the nephew and Beth (married to Ian in the first book). It is important to have read the first book because of the references made to actions in that novel and to understand why Mac felt he could barge in on Inspector Fellows.
